MK RanchMark and April Kealamakia, owners and managers Moses Yim Kealamakia, founder Rainfall: 45-50" Elevation: 3000' Location (s): Puu Kapu, Waimea (Mana Road) Breed (s): Angus, Galloway Operation type: finisher MK Ranch (formerly Block MK Ranch) was started in 1952 by Mark's father, Moses. The ranch is on Hawaiian home lands. After many years of operation, and with the help of friend Elmer R., MK Ranch has made changes and improvements with a single focus, gearing the animal towards the environment. The use intensive grazing techniques, practice calm handling, and keep the livestock in a no stress environment. Mark has a rule that any animal that takes flight when he is outside of a ten foot radius is removed from the herd. Mark makes everything as organic as possible, down to the fertilizer he uses in the pasture. Minimal medications are used to increase natural resistance. MK Ranch also produces a limited supply of sheep at this time. Future plans include increasing the production of sheep. Words of Wisdom: "Instead of gearing the environment to the animal, gear the animal towards the environment." |
