Kahua Ranch was founded on March 10, 1928 by Ronald Von Holt, Atherton Richards, and other members of the Richards family. Atherton passed away in the 1970's and left the ranch to his nephew Monty who continues to operate the ranch with his family to present day. "It will have been fifty years this December that I have been with the ranch" (2003) Monty says fondly.

In the 1980's, the ranch was split into Ponoholo Ranch and Kahua Ranch. It was one of the largest changes in the past years, says Monty. Since then the two ranches have both been in operation on the Kohala mountainside.

Kahua Ranch was the first ranch in the state to do cell grazing, starting in the 1970's. They also have the title of being the largest sheep ranch in the state, outside of Ni'ihau which has a large feral population.

Monty's experience with ranching when he started was his college education. That in hand, he has guided and watched the ranch operations change significantly over the years. At one time Kahua owned a ranch and a feedlot at Wailua on Oahu. They also had a company called Kahua Beef Sales and a slaughter house on Oahu.

Among the other things Monty has watched change over the years have been ranching management styles and philosophies. Breeds of cattle have changed as a result. Hereford was the main breed at one time. Kahua Ranch actually started their operation with the Charolais breed and was a registered dealer. Presently only a few Charolais bulls remain and are used for terminal crosses.

Today the ranch offers activities for tourists and has other diversified operations which compliment livestock production and sales. Monty is one of the senior ranch managers in the state of Hawaii and continues to be active in the operations of the ranch.

Words of Wisdom: "...if you are aiming for Hawai'i, you'd have to say that  if you want to make a million dollars in the livestock industry, be a multimillionaire when you get started..." -Monty Richards
